Update on Mare Island Naval Cemetery

Mare Island Naval Cemetery

Last week we brought you the story of the Mare Island Naval Cemetery in Vallejo, California.  As of last week  the American Legion endorsed the idea of the City of Vallejo turning the historic cemetery over to the Department of Veteran’s Affairs and the National Cemetery Administration, the group that operates national veteran’s cemeteries.

We told you that a petition was presented and both houses of the United States Congress both houses of the California legislature have introduced bills to do just that.  The city of Vallejo also agreed to the plan.

Today, however, we learned from an article that you can read here, that there is opposition to the plan by some local residents.  They prefer to continue to control the cemetery where over 900 souls rest and would prefer that the upkeep problems be solved by an endowment fund that could be established by the U.S. government.  They believe that Mare Island Naval Cemetery is a unique historical parcel and don’t want – as they refer to it – the cemetery turned into a national shrine.  This is a great little article that explains the cemetery and also has about six pictures attached to it for reference.

We will keep you updated on what happens with this cemetery.
