Fire Destroys Georgia Funeral Home

One of every owners worst nightmares came true on Tuesday, December 26, to Jerry Lee Taylor, the owner of Taylor Funeral home in Gibson, Georgia.  Early that morning fire raged through his funeral home in the rural Georgia town as explained in a story and video seen here from WJBF Television of Augusta, Georgia.

According to the story it all started about 4 am on Tuesday morning and it appears that the fire started near electrical boxes and propane tanks.  Also, according to Taylor, there were no bodies in the funeral home at the time of the fire.

The Taylor Funeral Home is the only funeral facility in Glacock County, Georgia.  Taylor said business will go on with visitations and funerals to be held in local churches and organizational halls.  He also stated that the business is a total loss and he expects to rebuild.

Funeral Director Daily take:  A sad story – especially during the Holidays.  On the other hand, as I’ve gotten older I’ve always came to the conclusion, “Nobody died. . . the rest can be repaired or rebuilt.”  So there is that to be thankful for.

This story is also a great reminder to funeral home owners that we must have back-up plans and contingencies in place for our businesses even before events happen.  I always had a contingency plan in place to be able to use one of our communities fraternal organizations if it became needed.  Luckily, that plan never was put into place.

Take the time today to make a note to check on your property insurance, liability insurance, and at least talk with staff members on what would be the plan if something like this happened to you.  You can never be too ready.
