Nebraska board member proposes columbarium under the football field
The University of Nebraska is evidently facing a $58 million budget shortfall for the coming season and ideas to eliminate it are coming forward. One such idea mentioned in this article, proposed by Nebraska regent Barbara Weitz, is to build a columbarium under the football field where departed fans can have their cremated remains interred.
Weitz made the following comments about the idea, “We really do love our sports teams and follow them everywhere. It’s part of being a Nebraskan. So why wouldn’t being buried under the field be a great way to be close to your team forever?”
According to the article, “Weitz’s proposal calls for construction of a columbarium to coincide with the replacement of the stadium playing surface, whenever that happens. A special entrance would allow fans to visit the niches of loved ones on game days.”
This type of memorial is not unheard of as the article also points out that there are columbariums and other fan memorials at soccer, rugby, and horse racing venues in Europe and colleges such as Notre Dame and West Point have cemeteries on campus.
Weitz also states that any money that comes in for this memorial space could be used for the academic side of the university.
