Where Would You Be on This Issue

The web-site for the Jersey City and Harsimus Cemetery describe it as a National Treasure that was founded in 1829.  It is known as a cemetery with soldiers from as far back as the Revolutionary War among the sacred dead.  The site goes on to say that the cemetery was abandoned in 2008 and “is now being saved and preserved by the dedication efforts of a newly formed volunteer Board of Trustees”.  You can view the web-site here.

However, we came across an article and video from WABC in Jersey City asking the question if the cemetery “crosses the line” with its fundraising parties.  Critics are speaking out, saying the parties “disrespect” the dead.

While the cemetery has raised “tens of thousands” of dollars with parties on the grounds family members with loved ones buried there want them to stop.

The parties feature live rock bands, blankets and lawn chairs spread across graves, port-o-potties set up, and hot dog stands.  Cemetery board members disagree with disenchanted families of loved ones.  The cemetery officials say that without the money that has been raised the cemetery would not have been able to be transformed from its forgotten status to an important cultural heritage park.

You can see the video of the news story here.

Funeral Director Daily take:  I don’t consider myself a prude and am pretty much open to listen to suggestions to improve anything.  I’m all for trying different types of things as long as they are done in good taste.  For instance, how the Hollywood Forever Cemetery has created great nights out for families by showing summer movies on it lawn is, in my opinion, a great use of the space the cemetery has available.

However, when I took a look at the video news story I must say that if my loved ones were in that cemetery the antics would probably really bother me.  Take a look at the video and then leave a comment down below so that we know what your impression is.
