Texas town approves Muslim Cemetery Plan

Periodically we have kept you up to date on what was happening with the planned Muslim cemetery that was proposed to be built about 40 miles northeast of Dallas, Texas.  As you can read in this article here, on Thursday the Town Council of Farmersville, Texas approved plans submitted by the Islamic Association of Collin County as the first step in moving forward with the project.

The cemetery was first proposed in 2015 but met with stiff opposition from residents who were concerned that the cemetery would be the first step in bringing a mosque or Muslim training center to the area.  The Islamic Association pulled the plan at that time but again put the plan forward  last year.  That plan, however, was rejected  due to a drainage issue.

After the rejection there was a potential threat of legal action from the Justice Department on potential charges of violating religious land use and other protections and on Thursday the latest plans were approved.

Plans call for the new cemetery to have about 11,000 burial sites with a pavilion, restrooms, and maintenance building.

Nada Shabout, a professor at the University of North Texas commented, according to the article,  that Muslims are part of the community in North Texas and should be respected for their own rituals, just as other religions are known for theirs.
