Settlement Reached in Mississippi Coroner Lawsuit

Just last Friday we reported of a case that was in trial concerning the issue of six Mississippi black-owned funeral homes believing that they did not receive as many death calls, proportionately,  from the coroner of Harrison County as white-owned funeral homes did. The plaintiffs were asking for $870,000 in damages for the years 2012-2016.

On Friday, U.S. District Court Judge Keith Starrett issued an order dismissing the case writing that both sides agreed he retained jurisdiction to enforce his order and impose attorney’s fees.

According to plaintiff’s attorney David Owens the county has agreed to give all funeral homes an equal chance on coroner calls going forward and will pay $110,000 in total damages to the black-owned funeral homes.

Tim Hollerman, an attorney representing the county said the case was settled with no finding of racial discrimination against the county coroner, Gary Hargrove.  He also mentioned that the $110,000 in damages will be paid from an insurer.
