Matthews and the Baseball Hall of Fame

I’ve been a big baseball fan since I served as Batboy of the local town team back in the 1960’s.  I played the game (not real well), managed an adult team, and had my most memorable time coaching years of Little League. . .with the highlight being my 2011 12-year old team winning the Minnesota State Championship.  I’m also a fan. . . .leading me to bring you a little information about Matthews International and their generations-long involvement with the Baseball Hall of Fame and the making of the plaques for those so enshrined.

As a Minnesota Twin fan it was an interesting week last week with the Hall of Fame.  Three of our players, Tony Oliva, Jim Kaat, and eventual Boston superstar David Ortiz, who started his career in Minnesota, where enshrined in the Hall of Fame.  I then noticed this article detailing how David Ortiz’ plaque was made (it is from the Boston Globe and you may not be able to open it).  It was interesting for me to see that it was made by conglomerate Matthews International of Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, who has a division of the company in the Memorialization business.  Matthews is also the parent company for Matthews crematories and Aurora Casket.
