Janssen Closing in on Iditarod Finish

Anchorage funeral home owner Scott Janssen is within 77 miles of the Nome, Alaska, finishing line as of this morning (Friday) when he left the White Mountain check-point in the grueling Anchorage to Nome Iditarod Sled Dog race.  Janssen checked into White Mountain last night at 5:30 pm took the obligatory 8-hour rest and headed out towards Nome at 1:37 am.

At a speed of approximately 8 mph it is conceivable that Janssen could finish during today’s 12th day of the 998 mile race.  As he left White Mountain, Janssen had moved up to 40th place from our last check-in when he was in 43rd place.  This is Janssen’s 8th running of the Iditarod — he has placed 38th and 42nd in his two finishes and failed to finish in five other attempts.

Janssen is a graduate of the University of Minnesota School of Mortuary Science and a native of Crookston, Minnesota.  He owns and operates Janssen’s Evergreen Memorial and the Alaskan Cremation Center in Anchorage as well as two other funeral facilities in Alaska and is known as “The Mushin’ Mortician”.
