The survey is in and the results say that even Seniors prefer a “Celebratory” approach to funerals

There is no doubt that trends move faster today than in the past.  That is probably because “news” moves faster also so it is easier and quicker to “get the word” out.  It is also apparent that trends are merging towards conformity world-wide. . .especially in the English speaking world.

The “Cost of Death Report 2.0” reveals that not only do people want a service “that reflects us – who we are and what makes us”, but 83% of Australians now prefer a “celebratory approach to funerals rather than mourning“.

The survey which you can access here not only delves on the types of services one may wish for but it also covers costs and other trends happening in the Australian marketplace. . . . which I would argue is becoming part of  a universal death care culture in the English-speaking world.

That culture includes simpler funeral services, less costly funeral services, and smaller funeral services.  As a matter of fact, 74% of respondents to the survey already believe that funerals are becoming smaller.

According to the survey, here are the Top 5 Observed breaks from what was considered “Tradition” only years ago:

  1. A focus on “Celebrating” and not “Mourning” — This was observed by 70% of respondents
  2. Not wearing black – 70%
  3. Fewer religious elements – 64%
  4. Technology used in more ceremonies – 59%
  5. Webcasting or Streaming live – 53%
  6. A focus on being “Good humored” and “Less Serious” – 52%

Here’s a couple of additional findings:

  • 90% felt that funerals were too expensive.
  • Despite the “challenges of cost”, 43% said the price was worth it.

It also appears that remotely attending a funeral via livestream is becoming more popular and common as time moves forward.  According to the survey it is now 10 times more common to attend by livestream as it was in 2019 (pre-pandemic).  That is probably a good reason to make sure that you have up-to-date streaming capabilities provided at your funeral home. (OneRoom Streaming).
