Texas Funeral Director Named Citizen of the Year

I don’t know funeral director Jim Ayres but he sounds like a person on a mission to bring funeral directors a good name.  And, anybody who is on that type of mission certainly sits good in good standing with me.

You can read an article from the Commerce, Texas, Journal here that announces Ayres’ recognition as the “Citizen of the Year” in Commerce.  This award is somewhat surprising, from my point of view, not that Ayres won it, but that he and his wife Teena have only been members of the community since 2015.

Turns out that becoming a funeral director and owning a funeral home was not Ayres second occupation, but his third.  He had previously served as an educator, then spent over 17 years in the ministry, before enrolling in mortuary school.  After a short stint as a funeral director in Nacogdoches, Texas, the couple found the opportunity to purchase the funeral home in Commerce.  All things seem to be going well in that situation as Ayres says that he and Teena have not looked back on their decision.

For those of you interested in the business of funeral homes and unique marketing opportunities, the article mentions that Ayres’ Commerce Funeral Home has a unique promotion at Texas A & M – Commerce football games called the “Coffin-corner” contest.  Contestants get a chance to put a football into a casket between quarters!!
