South Dakota Approves Veterans Cemetery

Last week the South Dakota legislature approved a plan to build a State Veterans Cemetery in Sioux Falls.  The Senate voted last week to direct the state to submit a grant application to the National Cemetery Administration and build the project. You can read about the project here.

The bill also calls for an endowment fund to pay for the construction and operation of the cemetery.

It is expected that Gov. Dennis Daugaard would sign the bill as long as the endowment fund is properly funded.

Funeral Director Daily take:  This cemetery on the populous eastern portion of South Dakota has been the State Veteran’s Association one and only ask from the state legislature this year.  The plan is to have donated land in the Sioux Falls area converted to a cemetery and then for the operation of the cemetery to be funded in perpetuity by a one-time budget request to fill an endowment fund for such purposes.

The only veterans cemetery in South Dakota is now located in the less populated western part of the state.
