Prison for Pre-Need Theft

In a case we have followed for the last year on Funeral Director Daily, Chad Harding, owner of the Gatens-Harding Funeral Home in West Virginia, was sentenced yesterday to up to 30 years in prison by Putnam Circuit Judge Joseph K. Reeder.  You can read more about the case and the sentencing here.

Harding, a funeral director, had pled guilty to accessing the proceeds of over 100 pre-need insurance policies on people before they had died.  The amount of money involved has been reported to be over $900,000.  The policies had been written by Homesteaders Life Insurance Company.

As you may remember, this case has also caused a look into the West Virginia Funeral Examining Board because when they were asked to rule on Mr. Harding’s license to practice mortuary science they did not revoke it for this action.  That has caused the examining board to become under investigation by the State Legislature.
