Peace on Earth, Goodwill to Men

Statue of Mary and Jesus
St. Mary’s Catholic Church
Alexandria, Minnesota

It’s been an unusual two years to say the least.  Covid-19, mandates, vaccinations, lockdowns, a presidential election where one candidate stayed at home and didn’t campaign,  hospitals filled to the brim. . . . . .any way you look at it, it has been a couple of years like no others in my lifetime.  And, it’s not been a lot of fun. . . Angie and I don’t go out to our traditional Friday night meal. . . we stay home, have pizza and watch a movie. . ..or she watches a movie and I watch sports!   Lots of other things are different too. . . . and we are ready for a return to normalcy soon.

When I think of those on the front lines of funeral service for the last two years I think of how tough it has been for them.  Lots of extra death calls. The first year they worked not knowing what they were facing and, without vaccines, not much in the way of defense as they took care of those who lives were lost and the families left to grieve.  Again, any way you look at it, they have put others first. . . . . that’s admirable and appreciated.

For those funeral directors and even those of us who are retired and just stay out of the way, we are starting to get weary and wonder when this will all end.  That’s why it is so good that the Christmas Season and the Season of Hope is coming into our lives right now.

You see, while we see the world spinning and we don’t know what is coming next. . . . there is a rhyme and a reason to what is going to happen.  That rhyme and reason comes with the birth of a Savior, Jesus Christ.  That birth, which we celebrate this weekend, brings forward one who can bring peace out of all the chaos — that one is Jesus Christ.

One of my favorite works of art is a statue at our community’s Catholic church.  It is a depiction, as you can see in the article photo, of the Christ child sitting in front of his mother. However, when you look closely at the Christ child you will notice that He is holding the globe (or the world) in his hand.  That is a great reminder to us all, while we are weary and see the world spinning in front of us, He has the world in His hand and His will and order will prevail.

It gives great promise of rest for the weary, peace on earth, and goodwill to men.

Merry Christmas. . . . . and a reminder, there is a “Reason” for the Season and He has our world under control.

Professing ones religious faith to 1 other person is sometimes uncomfortable, but generally doable for most of us.

However, doing it in print for an audience of 2,481 takes Courage
    + Faith.

Thanks for today’s article that demonstrated yours Tom.
