Image Watch — Don’t Let this Happen to Your Firm

Funeral Director Daily recently received an article and video clip from a New Zealand source that captures via dashcam a New Zealand hearse driver going through an intersection.  While that is an every day occurrence anywhere in the world what makes this clip different is that the back door of the hearse flies open and the stretcher goes cascading onto the street.

The one minute clip shows the passenger side occupant calmly retrieve the stretcher and put it back into the hearse like nothing happened.  The accompanying article does state, however, that some bystanders were somewhat shocked at the scene.  You can view the clip and read the article here.

Funeral Director Daily take:  When I operated my funeral home for over 30 years something like this would really bother me.  It appears that there was no damage done, but just the fact that people in the community would eventually approach me as a funeral director and tell the “funny story” of how they had seen or heard about the stretcher flying out of the back of a hearse was not pleasant for me.

I’ve aged and look at instances like this now as “no harm, no foul”, however, I think business is driven, at least in part, by the professional code of conduct and, quite frankly, just doing things right.  A hearse door that was not properly shut obviously is a mistake of someone.  Many times over my career I told my peers that I worked with, “It is the little things that are very important to the families we serve. We need to get all of those little things right.”  Little things include shutting the door when appropriate.

Final advice. . . Image is important. . . .and image can be represented in almost everything you do.
