Funeral Directors and . . . . and a little bit of nostalgia

Almost two years ago we brought you this story about Service Corporation International purchasing Allnutt Funeral Services in Colorado.  Turns out that one of the locations was in Greeley, Colorado and that location recently moved to a new location in west Greeley.

Upon that move we came across this story from the Greeley Tribune which highlights Mark Allnutt during the time he went to the old funeral home to clean out his remaining belongings.  It is an interesting story that brings you back to the time in the 1960’s and 1970’s when young sons of funeral directors helped their dads in virtually all aspects of operating a family owned funeral home.

And I was one of those “young sons” who just loved being at my dad’s side when possible.  I eventually became a 4th generation funeral director who was given great courses in family history by my father as a youth.

One of the things unique to Mark Allnutt, who had not worked at the funeral home since 1986, was that he and his father built Soap Box Derby cars which Mark raced during his youth.  The story has photos of these cars and I found it interesting that the advertising on the side was, “Macy Allnutt Mortuaries.  Interesting because back in those days much of funeral home advertising was reserved for church calendars, newspaper ads, and “all things professional” but not generally anything sports related.

Enjoy the article. . . . a great story of a time long ago when the business did not move at such a fast pace. . . .for me, it brought back wonderful memories of doing things with my dad over 50 years ago. . . . and as Memorial Day approaches.  . a great time to reflect on those who have given us wonderful memories but are no longer with us.

Just another example of the human interest stories that reporters seek out for the local newspaper. Many times funeral professionals look past opportunities like this that put a “human touch” on the profession.
