Colorado’s Regulatory arm Challenged about Sunset Mesa Case

The case of the Sunset Mesa Funeral Home in Colorado and its sister business of being in the body part business continues to cause stirs in that state.  Sunset Mesa Funeral Home has been shut down and its owner, Megan Hess, has left funeral service, but now many people are questioning the Colorado Department of Regulatory Agencies (DORA) which is responsible for checking on funeral homes.

In an article that you can read here from The Daily Sentinel, DORA is accused of knowing about the mis-adventures of the funeral home but keeping the complaint files open which meant that they were not available to the public.  As you may remember, the FBI came into the picture last February, did a surprise raid on the funeral home and the funeral home was closed.  To our knowledge, the FBI investigation is still ongoing.

The article claims that if DORA had moved the complaints forward much of what happened to consumers may not have happened as the first complaints came to DORA in 2014.  As early as 2015, according to the article, a competitor warned DORA that it was his assumption there was no way possible that cremated remains could be returned to families as they were.  You may remember, that some families believe that they received dry concrete powder from Sunset Mesa instead of the cremated remains of their loved one.

In addition, since the Sunset Mesa Funeral Home is now closed, DORA states that it no longer has jurisdiction over anything that happened there.
