Bringing the Fallen Home

I recently noticed a Department of Defense release that you can access here that pertains to the training of the Joint Mortuary Affairs Center (JMAC) of the United States Military.  The school is located at Fort Lee in Virginia and is responsible for training the young men and women of our military into becoming the next generation of mortuary specialists responsible for personnel retrieval and processing.

While it does not necessarily mention it, I believe this group – the JMAC – is primarily responsible for collecting the deceased in military theatres of war.  My understanding is that they would be the first step in bringing our honored dead back to Dover AFB and on to final rest at the communities that they hail from.

Mobile Integrated Remains Collection System (MIRCS)

The article, which I found to be very interesting mentions that these units no longer work in tents but operate out of Mobile Integrated Remains Collection System (MIRCS) that is portable and can be operational in 30 minutes.

As you may expect, many of the interviewed military personnel respond that they volunteer for this duty, the duty is inherently dangerous, and they are especially proud of their role in bringing deceased veterans back home.
