An “Above and Beyond” funeral director

Glen Davis drove school bus in his small Minnesota community for 55 years.  Starting in 1949 he was still driving and finally retired in 2005.  By that time he was driving the grandchildren of those school children he had driven in 1949.

And, Glen Davis was like a lot of people small town funeral directors get to know.  Whenever they see their friend the funeral director they say something like, “When I die. . . . . .”  For Davis, the line to Grand Meadow, Minnesota funeral director Jim Hindt, was, “When I die they should bury me in a school bus (or school bus casket).”

Well, according to this article (photo available in article) from the Minneapolis Star Tribune, Hindt – owner of the Hindt Funeral Home in that small town enlisted a family friend to paint a casket to look like a school bus – down to the details of having “Grand Meadow Schools – ISD #495” painted on the side.

About six years ago, Hindt showed the casket, a gift from Hindt to Davis, to him.  Hindt commented, “I wasn’t sure whether Glen really wanted to use it.”  But according to the article, “any doubt was removed immediately”.

Davis’ daughter is quoted in the article as saying, “He was overjoyed, and couldn’t believe somebody was actually able to do it for him.”

Davis died last Friday, February 15, 2020, at the age of 88 years.  Today, Friday, February 22, 2020, Glen Davis will be buried in the school bus casket, given to him by his friend the funeral director, and recognizing 55 years of devotion to the school children of Grand Meadow, Minnesota.

Stories like this need to be told because they tell of not only the devotion of many people to their community. . . but of the thankfulness of the community to this devotion.  Thanks to funeral director Jim Hindt for recognizing this devotion.
