A thought for the day. . . . . .
This short article will be going out on the morning of Christmas Eve and in preparing it I think of a Christmas Eve that always comes to mind for me in correlation to working in the funeral business. It was probably in the 1990’s, I was probably in my late 30’s age-wise, and concerned a small funeral that I was conducting at a beautiful rural church on Christmas Eve afternoon. What sticks out in my mind is the cemetery and how beautiful it was with snow on the ground, light large flakes of snow falling, and a beautiful sun warming us all at the cemetery during the committal service in the church yard.
I can still remember my mind wandering during that committal service that I would soon be with my extended family at our traditional Christmas Eve church service and then find us around the tree at my Mom’s house for a night of opening presents and celebrating.

The quietness and stillness of that day still speaks to me in knowing that I didn’t really want to be there. . . .I wanted my “Christmas Season with family” to have already started. However, there I was stepping outside my own wants and wishes and being there for a family that had asked. . . . . And, for them I think it was important to have laid their loved one to rest before they went on with their own Christmas celebration that year.
In a small sense, the scene that day epitomizes what a funeral director does. . . . .We serve when those in our midst need to be served. And, sometimes that might be on Christmas Eve.
May God Bless all of you who are working when duty calls. . . . .and may God Bless the Light of the World that arrived while many were simply going about their work.
Merry Christmas to all!!!
