Mount Ida Students Find a Home

Last April Mount Ida College decided to close its doors for good.  Most students from the college were able to find continuing studies when the University of Massachusetts – Amherst acquired the campus.  However, that school does not have a mortuary science program and those students from Mount Ida College with partially completed degrees, in that profession,  were left hanging.

We now know that Cape Cod Community College will not only help those students finish their degrees, but they anticipate getting approval to run the program into the future as well.  According to what representatives of Cape Cod Community College said in an article you can read here, they researched the profession and determined that funeral care businesses from all over New England are having challenges in meeting their employment needs.

More good news for students is that the college has indicated that when they are up and running they believe that their Mortuary Science Degree program will be less expensive to attend than what students at Mount Ida College had to pay.

Funeral Director Daily take:  This is a win-win-win situation for the students, Cape Cod Community College, and the funeral businesses of New England.  In my opinion, it is somewhat what higher education can be about — providing training to give meaningful employment to serve the needs of communities.  Hats off to Cape Cod Community College and all who made this possible.
