Military Mortuary Affairs Specialist’s dream comes true in opening his own funeral home

Tobias Uhrig served his country in the United States military and in doing that service he served in the Mortuary Affairs Unit.  His military career afforded him the opportunity to honor fallen service members while stationed in 339th Quartermaster Company in South Korea and later at the Armed Forces Medical Examiner System at Dover Air Force Base in Delaware.

According to this article from the Fort Morgan (CO) Times, it was during those times that he started to formulate a business and execution plan that would lead him to owning and operating his own funeral home.  Honorably discharged from the military in 2022, it was early in 2023 that the funeral home plan came into being for Uhrig and his wife, fellow funeral director Abigale.

The couple found that opportunity in Fort Morgan, Colorado, and within about four months of purchasing the former Church of Christ building in the community, they were open for business operating “Rowanoak Mortuary and Crematory”.

According to the funeral home’s website, the name “Rowanoak” hails from English folklore where rowan trees are seen as symbols of peace and protection, and from American tradition where oaks symbolize strength, stability, and honesty. The name was initially agreed upon by Tobias and his fellow Soldier, Aaron Mitchell, who both intended to open the business as partners after their time in service was complete. Aaron sadly passed in 2019, but his memory and legacy live on through the establishment of this business and the name that he helped to form for it.

Funeral Director Daily take:  I’m a capitalist and entrepreneur from the word “Go” and these types of stories about new business ventures excite me.  I’m guessing that there will be lots of hard work for Tobias and Abigale, but I’m also pretty sure that they will “weather the storm” and build a quality death care service in their Colorado city.
