And Now. . . A Funeral Home Video Game

In the world of the Millennials we should have expected this to come sooner or later.  On October 18, 2017, a video game where you play as a mortician was introduced to the general public.  Developed by Laundry Bear Games, the game is A Mortician’s Tale and  you can read all about it and even see some video of how it works in this Press Release.

From what I have learned the game deals with death in ways decidedly unlike most action-packed video games that often dominate the public.  In this game, decisions are based on, for lack of a better term, reality in the funeral industry.  The game takes about one hour to play and the player will be tasked with preparing bodies for viewing or cremation, attending funerals, and interacting with other staff members and loved ones.

According to the press release the game in informative, honest and looks at the current state of the death care industry.  We’ve even read that the main character, Charlie, has to deal with challenges as her independent funeral home is eventually bought out by Hillside Heritage Enterprises, a large corporation that is, according to an article in CBC Canada, more concerned with maximizing profits than consoling the bereaved.

“It’s very much a story about individual grief and family grief, but it’s also a story about the industry, and what the funeral home goes through,” says Gabby DaRienzo, designer and artist of A Mortician’s Tale.

The game may be played on either Windows or Mac platforms.  It can be ordered through the press release above

Funeral Director Daily take:  I have not played the game so I really cannot comment on the authenticity of the tasks involved.  I do believe, however, that anything that can help de-mystify the death care industry is a positive step for the industry.  Again, anything that is positive and encourages people to have discussions on death, dying, grief, and the funeral process is a step in the right direction for mental health and grief relief.
