NYC’s Frank E. Campbell Funeral Home celebrating 125 Years

It was back in 1926 that 31-year old movie star Rudolph Valentino died in New York City.  The Frank E. Campbell Funeral Home was selected to serve the family and that funeral probably changed the direction of the funeral home. . . now sometimes referred to as “The funeral home to the stars“.

Campbell’s funeral home certainly did something right in conducting the Valentino funeral which is said to have attracted over 30,000 people.   Campbell was a pioneer in moving the visitations out of family homes into what he referred to as “The Funeral Church” which was his funeral home.  Here’s some information from the New York City Public Library system on Frank E. Campbell (and a photo of the public descending on the funeral home for a chance to see Valentin0).

Over the years the Frank E. Campbell Funeral Home has gained more notoriety by serving the families of public figures such as John Lennon, Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis, Heath Ledger, Joan Rivers, and Ivana Trump.  This recent article from the New York Post states that the funeral home is celebrating its 125th anniversary.  . .however, it also states that the funeral home began in 1898, which by my figuring would indicate that 2024 is the business’126th year.

The year really doesn’t make a difference. . . it is the way that the funeral home gained notoriety and prestige that has garnered attention and business for the landmark facility.  Serving itself up as a funeral home “above and beyond” has certainly paid dividends for the Frank E. Campbell brand.

Frank E. Campbell – The Funeral Chapel is now owned by Service Corporation International and is listed under the company’s Dignity Memorial Premier Collection which is fitting for its Madison Avenue address in New York City.  Interestingly, while most of Service Corporation International funeral home websites have transparent pricing on them, I could not find the pricing for using Frank E. Campbell facilities.  The website does, however, offer a free funeral guide and price quote once you provide them with your identity and phone number.

You can visit the Frank E. Campbell – The Funeral Chapel website here.  There is approximately 50 pictures on the website and it gives one a good idea of what is expected in a SCI “Premier Collection” funeral home.
