Assurant reports. . . . Preneed seems to be “up in the air”

Worldwide insurance conglomerate Assurant reported both its 4Q 2020 and its Full Year 2020 results last week.  The company reports in three distinctive segments — Global Housing, Global Lifestyle, and Global Preneed. The total Earned Premiums of the entire company for the Full Year 2020 combined to $9.52 billion which is a better than 2% increase over the combined Earned Premiums of about $9.33 billion in FY 2019.  The company press release, which you can read here, had this to […]

The perception of our integrity

“Where have you gone Joe DiMaggio”.  Those were the lyrics of the Simon and Garfunkel song “Mrs. Robinson” released in 1968.  The country was in the summer of a presidential election and was mired in a controversial war in Viet Nam at the time.  The lyrics harkened back to a simple time in America. I took the time the other day to Google lists of the most trusted professions in America and if those two artists would compose that song […]

In today’s Afternoon Edition of Funeral Director Daily you will find that most of our linked stories deal with funeral homes and their handling of the COVID-19 situation.  We are also taking today to catch up with some items that you should be aware of in terms of PPE procurement, a webinar brought to us by the Cremation Association of North America (CANA) and Canadian Funeral Peer Support, information on the U.S. Senate’s passing of the Veteran Administration’s BRAVE Act, […]

Will we see shifts in funeral home employment post-pandemic?

I’ll tell you right away that this is one of those articles I write that you probably won’t get any answers from.  As a matter of fact, I hope you go away from today’s article asking questions and thinking about the future.  It’s the kind of article that I like writing, though . . . because it is all thought and conjecture. . . I can’t be proved wrong, yet!! So, I read a couple of articles over the weekend.  […]

Hillenbrand reports. . . Batesville segment shows strong results

Hillenbrand Industries, parent company of Batesville Casket Company, reported their July through September numbers – which happen to be their 4th Quarter fiscal year numbers, as well as their Fiscal Year End numbers last week.  Hillenbrand showed record revenues both for the quarter and the year.  You can access their financial report here. However, those numbers are somewhat skewed by the additional revenue during the year provided by the company’s acquisition of Milacron.  If you take away the Milacron acquisition […]

StoneMor bucks the system

Those of us who have watched the markets over the last few weeks have seen a deterioration in the value of our private investment portfolios.  What has happened in the broader market is also indicative of what has happened in the death care industry with the exception of StoneMor, Inc. and its stock and valuation. StoneMor, based out of Trevose, Pennsylvania, operates approximately 320 cemeteries and 88 funeral homes in 27 states and Puerto Rico.  It is no secret that […]

The weekend is almost here!!

As we have done on several other Fridays, we thought we would just send your way a few articles that we thought might be of interest without any commentary and let you decide if you want to learn more about the items featured. Here is an article on an Ohio cemetery owned by StoneMor Partners that the company has now agreed to attempt to stop the flooding after complaints by plot owners and the State of Ohio. Here is an […]

Chinese funeral directors working 24/7

Simply because this is happening in real time we thought we would link our readers to an article that appeared in the Epoch Times yesterday relating to an interview with a funeral director in Wuhan, China, and the work he has been doing, because of the coronavirus,  over the past week. A Mr. Yun is interviewed in this article and states that since January 28, “90% of our employees are working 24/7. . . we couldn’t go back home”.  Mr. […]

Article says Oregon “falls short” in death care inspections

I came across a really good consumer information article the other day about the State of Oregon and its Mortuary and Cemetery Board.  The point of the article was an information topic on how the funeral home, cremation, and cemetery industry is regulated in that state.  You can read the article here. As my headline indicates, the newspaper article headline also says that “Inspections of Oregon’s funeral services fall short”.  However, when you read the entire article it is not […]
