Online price lists are showing up

Earlier this week I was informed by a Funeral Director Daily reader that online price lists have started to appear on the websites of Service Corporation International (SCI) funeral homes.  Just to be clear, I’m not sure that this is news or not — because I’ve never taken the time to check out individual SCI funeral homes to see if they had price lists or not. However, the comment that I received from a reader was this, “Did you know […]

Federal Trade Commission apparently set to revise “Funeral Rule”

I’ve worked almost my entire career under the Federal Trade Commission’s (FTC) “Funeral Rule”.  The rule, for all practical purposes, required me to introduce “price” into the conversation whenever someone either called the funeral home or walked into the funeral home and asked about funeral, cremation, or memorial services.  It also required me to hand out itemized “price lists” in a format as prescribed by the FTC. Originally, the FTC came to the “Funeral Rule” because it perceived, possibly correctly, […]

FTC Funeral Rule comment period ends. . . what’s next?

The Federal Trade Commissions (FTC) “Funeral Rule” is up for review this summer and the comment period for public opinion into the rule ended on Monday.  So, now that that period is over. . what comes next? As you may well know, the Federal Trade Commission’s (FTC) “Funeral Rule” is up for review at this time.  The FTC has also extended the deadline for interested parties to submit comments to the agency to June 15, 2020, from the original April 14, 2020 date. The FTC Funeral Rule was first enacted in 1982 and follows the FTC’s guidelines to promote competition, and protect and educate consumers.  According to this article from the Daily Independent of Peoria, Arizona, “The […]

Dollars and Sense — The great debate over online pricing

I noticed last week that the Federal Trade Commission (FTC) will be seeking comment on whether to make changes to the Funeral Rule.  This is probably the least the FTC will do and there probably could be more to come.  In their notice, they mentioned areas of funeral services and pricing where they explicitly seek public comments.  The Funeral Rule as I talk in this article pertains to itemized price information and how it must be presented. One of those […]

Funeral up for Auction

“We’re going to auction off a funeral that has been donated”, said Dick Crooks, Superintendent of Center Ridge Cemetery in Sullivan, Indiana. Crooks calls his auction night, “Indian’s Most Unusual Auction”. That’s right — in an article and television news story that you can see here out of Indiana, the Center Ridge Cemetery will be holding an auction on April 14 as a fund raiser for the cemetery. According to Crooks, the 150 year old cemetery has need for funds […]
