TGIF – It’s been quite a week!!

Let’s see. . . Super Bowl, State of the Union Speech, Impeachment Vote, my Minnesota Twins got involved in a blockbuster baseball trade, and my Minnesota Gophers beat arch-rival Wisconsin in basketball. . . it’s been quite a week to keep everything straight.  To end it for my Funeral Director Daily readers I will not bore you with a long business related article. . . but, will just provide you with some links on death care information that has been in the news. . . . here goes:

  • Arizona Cemetery runs out of room — We’ve talked on these pages several times about problems some cemeteries are having.  However, most of those problems stem from the fact that there is a lack of earth burials to bring in revenue to, mainly, small rural cemeteries.  This article and news video from KVOA TV in Tucson tells a different story.  It tells the story about the City of Nogales (AZ) Cemetery and its problem in that it has no room left for earth burials.  In addition, the Assistant City Manager mentions in the video that some grave spaces may have been sold more than once.
  • Georgia and Alkaline HydrolysisThis article from the Cherokee Tribune & Ledger News tells us that the State of Georgia is making way for the legality of alkaline hydrolysis as a means of final disposition for Georgia citizens.  According to the article, a Georgia Senate bill passed 35-10 in favor of the option and it now proceeds to the Georgia House for a vote there.  Again, according to the article, an advocacy group refers to the process as a “more environmentally friendly and gentler process” than traditional fire burning cremation furnaces.
  • SICH Casket Distributor Expansion — SICH Caskets, according to a news release in late January, announced that they have grown their North American Distributor network by six distributors in 2019.  That brings the delivery network for the Chinese built caskets to 63 warehouses throughout North America.  According to the press release, SICH Caskets manufacturers over 200 models of caskets for burial and cremation.  You can see their web-site here.

Have a great weekend!!!

It is very disappointing to see Funeral Director Daily giving any oxygen to SICH Chinese Caskets. This is a company that uses North American raw materials shipped to China, manufactures their own caskets and ships them back to North America for storage in their own automated warehouses. There are two problems with this.
One – Raw materials are sent in large container ships that run on diesel fuel that cross the Pacific Ocean and pollute the environment. Finished product is sent back across the Ocean by container ships adding more carbon dioxide into the environment. Once on North American soil, the caskets are then sent to the Chinese Warehouse via trucks which run on diesel fuel. You get the picture.
Two – Chinese manufacturing plants in China do not pay taxes in North America. Batesville Casket Company, Northern Casket Company, Victoriaville Casket Company and others have manufacturing plants close to many funeral homes in north east and central North America. These companies pay property taxes and business taxes and employ our neighbors and friends with good paying jobs. These employees then pay income tax and, if they own their own home, property tax. In Ontario, and I would imagine most States, all these taxes help pay for our Police, EMS, Firefighters, Hospitals, Schools, State Parks, US Armed Forces, Canadian Armed Forces, Canadian and U.S. Coast Guard, the Erie Canal System, Trent-Severn Waterway and the list goes on. These taxes paid ensure that our national treasures are maintained and I would even include your beloved White House and our own Parliament Buildings here in Canada. Bottom line – when we buy products from anywhere other than North America, we all suffer from lost jobs and taxes that support our way of life. The younger workforce will not enjoy the benefits of well paying jobs but will instead be using the term “would you like fries with that”.
I have enjoyed serving families in my communities for the past 34 years and as long as I am in control of my funeral home, no foreign products will enter. This includes caskets, urns, stationary, vehicles, etc. Thanks for starting and continuing Funeral Director Daily and for allowing me to “Leave a Comment”.
