Meet the “Glam Reaper”

Many of the nicest people I know work in the funeral profession.  And, an interesting thing about some of those people is listening to the stories of how they got into the profession.  I’ve talked to people who were medics in the army, drove ambulance, or worked as nurses who all saw the the compassion that funeral directors exhibited and it moved them to join the profession.

Today, I want to introduce you to Ms. Jennifer Muldowney.  Ms. Muldowney, in my opinion, has an extensive background that makes her well suited to work in the profession.  A native of Dublin, Ireland, she has a Bachelor of Business Studies Degree from Dublin City University.  In addition, she has completed certificate courses in Wedding Planning, Public Relations, Event Management, and Digital Communications.

However, it was not that training that brought her into the profession according to this article from Her.  She lost two friends and a dog to death and it was that time period that brought practical and philosophical issues forward for her.  In that time of grief she looked logistically at funerals with an eye toward “event planning” and as a result wrote a book entitled, “Say Farewell Your Way:  A Funeral Planning Guide for Ireland.”

Today, Jennifer works in both Dublin and New York City operating her business, Farewell Funeral Planners.  In New York City she also works as an in-house Memorial Planner and Celebrant at Frank E. Campbell’s, the famous NYC funeral home.  She also has created a line of cremation jewelry called “Farewell Celtic Ashes” that clients can purchase as keepsake jewelry with cremated remains of both humans and pets.  You can see her products here.

According to the article in Her, Jennifer sees huge potential for the funeral industry.  “I have some plans to expand and also change the industry three ways:  personalize it, get it more eco-conscious, and get people pre-planning.”

Funeral Director Daily take:  It is refreshing to see people from outside the industry look into the funeral profession with so much optimism.  So often, many of us older and more experienced funeral directors look at the way the business used to be and wonder what is happening.  However, changes in attitude and ideas in an industry will create great opportunities for those that realize them.  My guess is that Jennifer Muldowney recognizes that opportunity on both sides of the pond.
