An update on some recent articles. . . .bus casket, SCI buildings

Just last week we wrote of a Minnesota funeral director who had taken the time, effort, and expense to customize a casket to look like a school bus for one of the beloved citizens of his community.  That person, who drove a school bus in the small community for 55 years, recently died and his funeral service was held last Friday.  Here is a news video and story about the funeral and the funeral director who made it happen.

We have also recently told you of several divestments by Service Corporation International of aging large funeral facilities across the country.  In general, they are not closing these facilities for lack of services, but are building newer, more contemporary facilities to take their place in the same communities.

We have also made the argument that these facilities that have been sold have become more valuable over the years as development property than as working funeral establishments.  This news story tells of the eventual sale of the SCI owned Olinger Moore Howard Funeral Chapel in the Denver metropolitan area that is finally being sold.  After SCI had announced the sale to a company who planned to tear down the building, a group of local people protested on the grounds of historic preservation for the neighborhood.  Today, as reported, a different development group has finally agreed to purchase the funeral home building and will keep it standing as part of their development.
