50 year funeral director. . . “Stopping ain’t an option”

Part of researching what is happening in the death care industry is the fun of just finding out what is out there in the world.  And, I’ve found that some of those who work in the profession are just the nicest people around.  Part of the game is to make a living doing what you like to do, but we have also found out that part of the game is just getting to do what you love to do and help others in the process.

Today we are going to bring you articles and a news video interview that will allow you to look at our profession all the way from urban New York City, to the outdoor air of Idaho Falls, and across the Pacific Ocean to the nation of New Zealand.  We will bring you some features on people who represent our profession to the max in what they do.

  • Here is an article from the New York Daily News on Mr. Isaiah Owens and the Owens Funeral Home in Harlem, New York.  Owens says business is always booming at his mortuary but his real reason for existing is to help people get through their grief in whatever way possible.  Owens works in a top-hat and tails and his firm owns a Rolls Royce hearse.  He has been on the job for 50 years which he says seems like a short time.  Owens says, “I’m still going pretty strong.  Stopping ain’t an option.”
  • From the East Idaho News we bring you this article and video interview with Mr. Brian Wood.  Wood is a 5th generation funeral director who owns and operates two funeral homes — one in Idaho Falls and one in Ammon, Idaho.  Both funeral homes have crematories and combined the funeral homes do over 700 calls annually.  In the video interview Wood touches on how the profession has changed over the years.
  • This article from Newsroom New Zealand introduces us to Francis and Kaiora Tipene the husband/wife duo behind Tipen Funerals in Auckland, New Zealand.  The article touches on how they try to compete with industry giant InvoCare in New Zealand and how they say they can help any family. . . . from those families who want the Deluxe Packages to those families who really want DIY (do it yourself) funerals but need a little help and guidance in getting the job done.
